“Soon the water footprint will be written on the labels”Expressing that the common goal of the world is to fight against the climate crisis, TOBB E-commerce Council Member and Founding CEO of Ticimax E-commerce Systems Cenk Çiğdemli stated that the necessity of sustainability has radically transformed the e-commerce sector. The climate crisis is now in the focus of companies as well as states. Both global companies and Turkish industrial giants have been publishing reports containing carbon emission reduction, water footprint and sustainability targets, especially for the last two years. Expressing that the common goal of the world is to fight against the climate crisis, TOBB E-commerce Council Member and Founding CEO of Ticimax E-commerce Systems Cenk Çiğdemli stated that the necessity of sustainability has radically transformed the e-commerce sector. In November last year, 197 countries signed the Glasgow Climate Pact in Glasgow. In Glasgow, issues such as what level to limit the global temperature increase, fossil fuels, compensation for the losses and damages of the countries worst affected by the climate crisis were the focus of discussions. According to the Glasgow Climate Pact conclusion, nearly 450 financial institutions that control $130 trillion have committed to support clean technologies such as renewable energy and direct financing outside of the fossil fuel industries. Turkey, on the other hand, announced its goal of being net zero carbon by 2053 here.“Everyone should take responsibility”Emphasizing that it is an indisputable fact that every sector, including e-commerce, has to take responsibility, Ticimax E-commerce Systems Founding CEO Cenk Çiğdemli said, “According to the report published by the global climate organization Climate Action Tracker, the world will have a temperature of 2.4 degrees until the end of the century. will face an increase. This is a very critical increase for our world and life. In order to slow down this increase, sustainable production, reducing the water footprint in production and consumption, reducing carbon emissions, recycling and turning to renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels are among the first things to be done.”“Smart countries trade virtual water to conserve water”Pointing out that many textile brands now put the phrase 'recyclable' on their labels, Çiğdemli said, "The consumer has become more sensitive to this issue. Being sensitive isn't a choice, it's actually a necessity. Because even for the production of a single pair of jeans, 10 thousand liters of water is consumed. Or, 80 liters of water are consumed for each $1 piece of a car, 140 liters for a cup of coffee, 5,000 liters for a kilo of cheese, and 40 liters for a slice of bread. How? For example, let's take an example from coffee, about 140 liters of water is consumed until the coffee beans in a cup of coffee are planted, grown, blended, collected, transported and processed in the factory. For example, some smart countries no longer produce food and industrial products that consume a lot of water, but import them in order to protect their own water resources. This is called 'virtual water trade' in the literature. We are in an age where we have to consider the burden of everything we buy and produce to the world.”“Soon the water footprint will be written on the labels”Emphasizing that e-commerce, which is directly related to production and consumption, cannot be considered away from this entire transformation process, Çiğdemli said: “Soon, manufacturers will have to write details such as water footprints, whether they are produced from recyclable materials, and the sustainable production principles they adhere to. Generation Z, which is extremely sensitive to the environment, will demand it anyway. Because they want to buy products that load less on the world. On the other hand, the cargo and courier industry will also be affected. Companies that deliver with electric vehicles in e-commerce will get one zero ahead. Now we started to talk about waterless production technologies in textile. Such technologies will transform both industries and e-commerce.”
