NORTH American rail volume for the week ending December 18 on 12 reporting US, Canadian and Mexican railways totalled 331,416 carloads, down 1.1 per cent together with 349,986 intermodal units, a fall of seven per cent year on year, according to the Association of American Railroads (R).
Total combined weekly rail traffic in north America was 681,402 carloads and intermodal units, down 4.3 per cent. North American rail volume for the first 50 weeks of 2021 was 34,480,405 carloads and intermodal units, up 4.8 per cent compared with 2020.
US railways reported year to date volumes of 11,603,216 carloads, up 6.7 per cent from the same point last year; and 13,733,756 intermodal units, up 5.3 per cent from last year.
Total combined US traffic for the first 50 weeks of 2021 was 25,336,972 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 5.9 per cent compared to last year.
Canadian railways reported 76,466 carloads for the week, down 9.7 per cent, and 65,863 intermodal units, down 9.8 per cent compared with the same week in 2020. For the first 50 weeks of 2021, Canadian railways reported cumulative rail traffic volume of 7,323,349 carloads, containers and trailers, up one per cent.
Mexican railways reported 20,246 carloads for the week, up 3.3 per cent compared with the same week last year, and 14,728 intermodal units, up five per cent.
Cumulative volume on Mexican railways for the first 50 weeks of 2021 was 1,820,084 carloads and intermodal containers and trailers, up 4.3 per cent from the same point last year.
