ACCORDING to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), strong travel demand has propelled world air traffic to 96.1 per cent of pre-coronavirus levels in May, reports Ankara's Anadolu Agency.
Measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs), air traffic experienced a significant year-on-year increase of 39.1 per cent during May.
The industry load factor, a measure of aircraft occupancy, reached 81.8 per cent, with North American carriers leading at 86.3 per cent.
'We received more positive news in May, as planes operated at high capacity with average load factors reaching 81.8 per cent,' said IATA director general Willie Walsh.
In terms of domestic air travel, there was a remarkable surge of 36.4 per cent compared to the previous year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 5.3 per cent.
International air traffic also experienced a notable rise of 40.9 per cent compared to last year, with RPKs reaching 90.8 per cent of the 2019 levels.
