GERMANY's lufthansa has banned cargo from moving through its Frankfurt - Europe's biggest cargo airport - because of surging Covid infections, Bloomberg reports.
The move will impact goods arriving from other parts of Germany, the rest of Europe and North America. Direct deliveries to Frankfurt are still possible, Lufthansa said.
Frankfurt Airport handled record volumes of cargo last year despite a reduction in bellyhold capacity. The German hub handled a record 2.3 million tonnes last year, up 18.7 per cent year and 8.9 per cent ahead of the pre-Covid 2019.
Lufthansa Cargo is one of the world's biggest air-freight companies and imports and exports essential components for some of Germany's leading manufacturers. The bulk of the cargo business is routed through Frankfurt Airport.
Said a Lufthansa spokeswoman: 'We are currently experiencing an increasing number of coronavirus cases and related staff absences within our organisation, mainly at the Frankfurt hub.'
Lufthansa Cargo's Frankfurt site has one of Europe's largest runway-side cold-storage facilities and is a major transit hub for coronavirus vaccines being shipped from German factories producing the Pfizer and AstraZeneca shots to the wider world.
