A TOP German diplomat urged the UK to honour the post-Brexit Northern Ireland Protocol, warning that the dispute over the issue isn't a game to mess with, as EU ministers rallied behind the bloc's chief negotiator, reports Bloomberg.
'Dear friends in London and in Britain, please come to your senses,' said EU deputy foreign minister Michael Roth.
'Following painstaking negotiations, which lasted for a very long time, we made clear agreements,' said Mr Roth.
The protocol allowed the UK to leave the EU's single market without building a hard border on Ireland.
Under the deal, goods moving into Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK are subject to customs checks if they could instead be moved into the EU later on.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government urged to renege on the deal, with the two sides signaling optimism a trade war can be averted.
'What we are going through here is not a game. It's about the interests of people in the UK and it's about the interests of the European Union,' said Mr Roth.
'Damn it we want to work together in a cooperative and friendly way. We don't want to constantly fight over what we've already agreed.' said Mr Roth.
