COLORADO's west Star Aviation is launching West Star Aviation Academy (WS) to do its part in addressing the aircraft maintenance technician shortage, reports Grand Junction, Colorado's Daily Sentinel.
The academy aims to prepare and certify workers for the aviation industry at a quicker rate than the industry's traditional apprenticeship programme that lasts between 18 and 30 months.
The WS is designed to streamline the old apprenticeship model and remove the financial barrier to obtaining the skills and education to become a licensed and ready aircraft maintenance technician (AMT).
West Star said its first cohort will include hiring 25 apprentices who will spend seven and a half months learning while earning wages and benefits through a full-time educational curriculum that's coupled with practical training, mentoring and job shadowing.
WS's pilot year will be hosted by Southwestern Illinois College through their Part-147 Federal Aviation Administration-approved curriculum and will be taught in a designated West Star learning hangar that will incorporate the newly developed Choose Aerospace curriculum along with West Star technical training.
