THE vancouver Fraser Port Authority, Canada's busiest harbour, increased first half tonnage seven per cent year on year to a record 76.4 million tonnes, an up five per cent over the record set in 2019.
First half container volume increased 24 per cent year on year to a record 1.9 million TEU, and up 15 per cent over 2019's record throughput.
Strong overseas demand for Canadian grain products - a main driver of the overall record mid-year cargo volumes - resulted in record mid-year volumes of bulk grain, up 20 per cent to 16.5 million tonnes compared to mid-year 2020 and up 35 per cent from 2019.
Total foreign tonnage and foreign exports resulted in 60.3 and 52 million tonnes, up four per cent respectively, compared to mid-year 2020 volumes, due to strong increases in grain and coal.
The port authority said it was advancing two container terminal projects, the Centerm Expansion Project and the Roberts Bank Terminal 2.
Construction of the Centerm expansion is well underway. If approved, the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project will provide a 50 per cent increase to the port's container capacity.
Import container quantities increased 20 per cent to 989,442 TEU. Export boxes increased 29 per cent to 954,650 TEU.
Breakbulk cargo increased 36 per cent to 10 million tonnes. Log volumes increased 60 per cent, while wood pulp decreased six per cent compared to 2020.
Bulk dry cargo increased six per cent. Coal volumes increased seven per cent and grain volumes were up 20 per cent, potash rose 0.3 per cent and sulphur fell 20 per cent.
Bulk liquid tonnage fell 18 per cent over mid-year 2020 due to a 24 per cent decrease in petroleum products and a seven per cent decrease in chemicals.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is the federal agency responsible for the stewardship of the Port of Vancouver. The port authority is structured as a non-share corporation, is financially self-sufficient and does not rely on tax dollars for operations.
