THE us Biden administration has launched a US$4 billion initiative to reduce heavy-duty truck emissions and electrify US ports, aiming to mitigate the disproportionate effects of pollution on nearby communities, reports Reuters.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has solicited feedback for its $3 billion Clean Ports Programme, which seeks to reduce pollutants at ports, and its $1 billion Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicle Programme, which aims to decrease emissions from vehicles near ports and truck routes.
The EPA has requested information on the availability, market price, and performance of zero-emission trucks, port equipment, electric charging, and other infrastructure needs.
The White House National Climate Advisor has stated that this programme will aid in the shift to clean, American-made technologies and decrease pollution in port communities.
The EPA has finalised new clean air standards for heavy-duty trucks, and the Senate recently voted against those standards.
Meanwhile, California regulators have passed regulations requiring all medium- and heavy-duty vehicles sold in the state to be zero-emission by 2036.
