DURING a meeting attended by over 100 countries, an interim emissions reduction goal for global aviation by 2030 was agreed upon, reports Reuters.
The objective is to achieve a five per cent decrease in carbon emissions through the utilization of cleaner fuels, such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), as announced by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) after five days of United Nations-led discussions in Dubai.
Notably concerns were raised by China, Russia, and some other nations regarding the potential economic impact.
Initially proposed as a five to eight per cent target in the draft, the settled goal was communicated at the meeting held in anticipation of the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP28) climate summit.
The US expressed satisfaction with the agreed-upon target during the closing session, highlighting its role in sending a 'clear and positive signal' to the financial community, emphasizing the need for investments in new clean energy projects.
Considering that aviation contributes to an estimated two to three per cent of global carbon emissions, the significance of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in emission reduction was underscored.
However, SAF remains expensive and constitutes less than one per cent of the total global jet fuel.
Colombia ICAO representative Mauricio Ramirez Koppel asserted that the five per cent target would catalyze and expedite SAF projects by providing investors with a clear objective.
