THE total US weekly rail traffic was down 8.1 per cent compared to last year, equalling 489,801 carloads and intermodal units, reports American Association of Railroads (R).
Total carloads for the week ending April 16 were down 6.8 per cent to 221,228 carloads, while US weekly intermodal volume was down 9.2 per cent to 268,573 containers and trailers.
Two of the 10 carload commodity groups posted an increase compared with the same week in 2021. The two groups were chemicals, up 849 carloads, to 33,090; and coal, up two carloads, to 61,550.
For the first 15 weeks of 2022, US railroads reported a cumulative volume up 1.9 per cent to 3,444,827 carloads and 3,910,355 intermodal units, down 6.8 per cent from last year.
Total combined US traffic for the first 15 weeks of 2022 was down 2.9 per cent to 7,355,182 carloads.
