The contaminated bunkering crisis in Singapore will likely result in tens of millions of dollars in claims.
140,170 tons of dirty fuel worth 120 million dollars
A total of 60 bunker ships carrying chlorinated fuel (HSFO) were identified in Singapore recently, while 140,170 tons of contaminated fuel worth approximately $120 million were identified.
200 ships received contaminated fuel
On the other hand, the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) has identified 200 ships that have received high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) containing high concentration levels of chlorinated organic compounds. It is stated that about 80 of the 200 ships from which the fuel is supplied have reported various problems with their fuel pumps and engines.
Sources in the US warn that a similar contaminated fuel problem has been identified in Houston.
