THE Libyan Port of Benghazi's was closed earlier this week after armed clashes left seven dead and 17 injured and parts of the complex occupied over by guerillas on Saturday June 21.
Fighting broke out after customs seized seven tons of hashish from two reefer FEUs aboard the Liberian-flagged 1,142-TEU Jaguar. The hashish was hidden beneath crates of melons and coconuts from Senegal via Malta.
Gunfights broke out between the guerillas and security forces, after the drugs were to be burnt on the docks; the smoke and smell could be seen and smelt across the city.
"They always do this with drugs. It is standard practice," said one Benghazi resident, according to London's Loadstar.
Saturday's seizure was the third discovery of smuggled hashish this month. A similar consignment was found in three containers unloaded from another Liberian-flagged vessel in Benghazi in mid-June.
In that case, five tons of the drug were concealed beneath crates loaded with fruit and vegetables. The next day, 10 tons of cannabis were discovered at Khoms port, in reefer box aboard 1,116-TEU Maersk Regensburg.
