UAE's Gulftainer wins 35-year deal to run Port Canaveral terminal
GT-USA, the US arm of UAE-based terminal operator Gulftainer, has won a 35-year contract to operate and further develop the container and multi-purpose cargo terminal at Port Canaveral in Florida.
The terminal is set to commence operations in the fourth quarter, and Port Canaveral authorities said the company is investing US$100 million in improvements to infrastructure, equipment and locally-sourced human capital.
"The arrival of larger ships and increased cargo handling will add significant value to Florida's economy," said chief executive officer of the Canaveral Port Authority John Walsh.
Gulftainer said its goal is to triple cargo volumes and handle 18 million TEU, and operate 35 terminals across five continents by 2020.
