BRAZIL's Port of santos posted a 14.2pc increase in container throughput to 4.8 million TEU in 2021, reported London's Port Technology International.
More than 25 per cent of foreign trade that passes through Santos is China based. Sao Paulo remains the state with the highest participation in foreign trade via Santos at 56.5 per cent.
In December, Santos also recorded the best monthly mark in history for containers: 452,600 TEU, an increase of 3.5 per cent compared to December 2020.
In the last 12 years, Santos grew at an annual rate of 6.6 per cent for growth on containers.
'This is a reflection of the Port of Santos privatisation process, attracting more and more cargo and remaining at the forefront,' said Santos Port Authority (SPA) CEO Fernando Bira.
Said SPA operations chief Marcelo Ribeiro: 'Our current capacity is 5.3 million TEU. We are already preparing the auction for a new area for container operation, STS 10, which should take place in the second half of this year.'
Last year, a total of 4,856 vessels docked at the Port of Santos. The number was one per cent lower than in 2020.
