THE port of Vancouver moved 158 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo in 2024, a 5 per cent increase from the 150 MMT recorded in 2023, driven by performances in the auto, bulk, and container sectors despite challenges like climate change, wildfires, geopolitical tensions, and labour disputes, according to the company's release.
Bulk volumes rose 8 per cent to 117.9 MMT, with liquid bulk exports increasing 203 per cent to 17.1 MMT, including petroleum exports at 15 MMT (up 282 per cent) and canola oil at 0.9 MMT (up 74 per cent), while dry bulk fell 4 per cent to 96.0 MMT, with grain at 29.0 MMT (up 1 per cent), sulphur at 3.3 MMT (up 8 per cent), coal at 41.9 MMT (down 2 per cent), and potash at 8.2 MMT (down 8 per cent).
Container volumes grew 11 per cent to 3.5 million TEU, with imports up 14 per cent to 1.8 million TEU and exports up 5 per cent to 794,724 TEU, while empty containers rose 11 per cent to 857,343 TEU, reports St Petersburg's PortNews.
