THE Port of Beirut saw total container throughput, including transshipment volumes, drop by 2.23 per cent year on year to stand at 740,030 TEU by July.
A breakdown of the results showed that container volumes fell by 10.14 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier to reach 457,787 TEU. On the other hand, transshipment volumes rose by 13.13 per cent to 280,000 TEU by July, reported Beirut's BLOMINVEST bank.
The port's revenues fell by a 13.97 per cent year on year to stand at US$119.30 million by July.
Local shipments by Mediterranean Shipping Company decreased by 9.37 per cent from the previous year to total 135,330 TEU, while their transshipment volume dropped from 157,293 TEU to 142,402 TEU.
Meanwhile, local shipments by CMA CGM reached 80,978 TEU, down 10.21 per cent year on year, while their transshipment volume shrank from 112,336 TEU to 93,864TEU.
In addition, the total volume of imported and exported merchandise decreased by an annual 10.91 per cent to 4119.02 tons and the number of imported cars also dropped by 15.02 per cent against the previous year to 37,384. The number of ships docking at the port fell from 1,091 by July 2018 to 1,016 by July 2019.
