THE Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) has announced the first container shipment via railway from Jubail Commercial port to Riyadh Dry Port, reports London's Port Technology.
This shipment, consisting of 78 containers, utilised the railway link between the Jubail Commercial Port and the East Railway network. The railway has a maximum load capacity of 140 TEU per trip.
MAWANI collaborated with the Zakat, Tax, and Customs Authority (GAZT), Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR), and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). This collaboration aims to promote seamless transportation of containers, bulk materials, and general goods by establishing rail connections between ports.
The SAR networks reportedly facilitate connectivity between the Riyadh Dry Port and various ports including King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, King Fahd Industrial Port in Jubail, Jubail Commercial Port, and Ras Al-Khair Port.
Moreover, MAWANI entered into a partnership agreement with Saudi Arabia Railways in early April to establish a unified framework and adopt a general organisational and legislative model for cargo transportation activities to and from MAWANI s ports via railways.
Operating the railway line enhances the connection between maritime and rail transport modes, increases the efficiency of logistics operations, said MAWANI in a statement.
This initiative will provide logistical support to industrial and commercial ports in the Kingdom, enhancing their competitiveness and supporting trade movements by offering safe and sustainable solutions that reduce harmful emissions and help maintain the environment. Earlier this year, MAWANI and MEDLOG, the logistics arm of MSC, invested a value exceeding SAR150 million (US$40 million) in the integrated Logistics Park at Dammam s King Abdulaziz Port.
