INDIA's Jharkhand state police north of Kolkatta rescued 30 cows which were being transported to Bengal from Bihar in a 40 foot container at Maithon toll plaza of Jharkhand-Bengal border, reports the local Lagatar News.
Police said that the container driver Naushad Khan and his helper Ashish Kumar were arrested. Both the arrested persons belong to Bihar. Their Aadhar cards were also seized.
The rescued cows were handed over to Katras Gaushala, 50 kilometres away from the district, after a checkup by veterinary doctor.
The police also seized four number plates of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and other from the container allegedly used by cattle smugglers in trafficking cows from one state to another to dodge the police.
'Getting tip off that cattle are to be smuggled to Bengal, we put up a barricade at Maithon toll plaza on National Highway-2 at 11 am and began checking of trucks and containers. During the inspection, a loaded container came. When inquired, the driver failed to say what was loaded in it. We checked the container and found cows in it,' said the officer in charge.
Smuggling of cows to West Bengal through National Highway-2 and GT Road has increased these days. Three days ago, local people of Nirsa had caught two transports loaded with cows on Chirkunda bridge of Jharkhand- Bengal border.
