GERMANY's Hapag-Lloyd has ordered five 10,500-TEU ships from Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries to be delivered from October 2016 and May 2017 and deployed on South American routes after the expanded Panama Canal opens next year.
The new Hapag-Lloyd ships will have 2,100 reefers plugs, suitable to transport perishables such as fruit, vegetables, meat, fish or pharmaceuticals, said a company statement.
In addition, they are equipped with a highly efficient main engine, an optimised hull shape and an innovative lashing and loading system for greater loading flexibility, it said.
"This order underlines Hapag-Lloyd's leading role in the Latin American trade. Following our merger with CSAV, we are one of the market leaders trade and offer a variety of excellent connections to and from South America," said Hapag-Lloyd chief operating officer Anthony Firmin.
