AS part of a contract awarded by DP World, Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has commenced construction of a new terminal basin in Sokhna port on Egypt's Red Sea coast south of the Suez Canal. The project is slated for completion next year.
Egypt's rapid economic growth over the last couple of years driven by overseas investment has created demand for additional capacity at the port, which is operated by a local division of DP World, reported Dubai's Maritime Standard.
DP World plans to build a second container terminal at Sokhna, doubling the port's existing 1.1 million TEU annual capacity. The development of the new basin is a key part of this project, which will involve significant dredging, land reclamation and quay construction work.
