Rail container dwell times at the Fairview terminal in Prince Rupert are averaging no more than a day, and dwell times in Vancouver are about 2 to 2.5 days, he said.
By contrast, dwell times at Los Angeles and Long Beach in August were 8.2 days, which was lower than 11.3 days in July but still at a level that contributes significantly to marine terminal congestion at the southern California gateway, according to the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association.
Terminal operators in Los Angeles-Long Beach as well as Seattle-Tacoma have called excessive rail container dwell times a key issue contributing to terminal congestion.
Imports from Asia in southern California are up 28.7 per cent through August year on year, according to PIERS. Asian imports through Oakland and Northwest Seaport Alliance of Seattle and Tacoma are up 18.7 per cent and 35.2 per cent year to date.
