NORTHWEST Seaport Alliance (NWSA) terminal operators are facing problems similar to those in Los Angeles and Long Beach, reports IHS Media.
Congestion in the Pacific Northwest has spawned vessel bunching, excessive container dwell times, and a severe chassis shortage.
The problems are likely to get worse as peak season imports overwhelm the Seattle-Tacoma port complex.
The problems surfaced in late August when import distribution and warehouses began to fill, taking less than a month to hit maximum capacity.
Imports from Asia in August increased 25.2 per cent year on year at Seattle-Tacoma. Year to date through August, imports from Asia were up 35.2 per cent from the same period last year and 13.5 per cent from pre-Covid crisis.
'We are well aware of those issues. Our commercial team is reaching out to the warehouses,' said NWSA chief operations officer Thomas Bellerud.
The concern is that the warehouses have run out of floor capacity and won't accept import loads at the pace the marine terminals are handling cargo.
