A container with 52,800 cans of beer, believed to be from China and being passed off as office furniture, was seized at North Port in Port Klang, Selangor, reports Malaysia's Star.
Customs Penang director Roselan Ramli stated an enforcement team from the department raided the consignment at about 10:30 am on May 17 after receiving information and following two weeks of surveillance.
The consignment, he said, was then brought back to Penang for further investigation.
Mr Ramli stated the cans held a total of 26,400 litres of beer valued at MYR216,480 (US$45,915), with unpaid duties amounting to MYR785,411.
Mr Ramli stated the beer was brought in illegally in breach of Item 3, Third Schedule/Part 11, of the Customs (Prohibition on Imports) Order 2023.
