Bangladesh joins UK's DP Rail to build Dhaka-Payra port rail freight link
THE Bangladeshi Government and Bangladesh Railway have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with British company DP Rail to construct a 240-kilometre railway between Dhaka and Payra sea port that is expected to carry two million TEU of rail freight in its first year of operation in 2024, rising to four million TEU by 2030.
The agreement gives DP Rail the exclusive right to design, finance, build and operate the new railway line between Dhaka and Payra port. China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has been chosen as the project's principal civil engineering contractor, reported Global Rail News.
UK trade envoy Rushanara Ali MP, who attended the signing ceremony on December 20, was quoted as saying: "This is a project of vital national importance to Bangladesh, and I welcome the fact that this project has been proposed as a best of British railway, representing a substantial export opportunity for the UK railway supply chain."
