Koç University's Maritime Forum commemorates the 100th anniversary of Turkey's Cabotage Law with a significant panel at RMK Museum's Fenerbahçe.
The Cabotage Law, which establishes the Turkish flag as the sole authority in the territorial waters and ports of the Republic of Turkey and symbolizes our economic independence at sea, was highlighted by the Koç University Maritime Forum (KÜDENFOR) on its 100th anniversary. The special panel held on the RMK Museum Fenerbahçe Ferry, one of the iconic structures of the Golden Horn, drew attention as it was the first event to be organized in the centenary of cabotage.
Meaningful Panel for the 100th Anniversary of the Cabotage Law from KÜDENFOR
The Cabotage Law, prepared under the vision of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk when the young Republic of Turkey was only in its third year, was accepted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on April 19, 1926, and came into effect on July 1, 1926. As we approach the 100th anniversary of this historic step that ended capitulations at sea, KÜDENFOR was the first institution to bring the issue to the agenda.
In the panel titled 'Turkish Cabotage and World Practices in its 100th Year,' organized by KÜDENFOR Director Retired Admiral Cem Gürdeniz, experts shared the historical, legal, and economic dimensions of the Cabotage Law with the participants.
Experts Explained the Importance of Cabotage
The panel, which began with the opening speech of Ret. Admiral Cem Gürdeniz, featured Prof. Dr. Samim Ünan, who evaluated the position of the right of cabotage in international maritime law and trade, drawing attention to the legal strength of Turkey's achievements in this area.
Aret Taşçıyan, one of the leading figures in the marine insurance sector, addressed the commercial aspect of cabotage, emphasizing its strategic importance in maritime transportation and logistics.
Academic Deniz Güler presented the historical development of the right of cabotage and its current international applications based on academic data.
Historic Atmosphere on the Fenerbahçe Ferry
The panel held in the historic atmosphere of the Fenerbahçe Ferry stood out not only as a commemoration event but also as an important preparation and awareness step for the 100th anniversary of the Cabotage Law to be celebrated in 2026.
The strong connection between the deep-rooted history of Turkish maritime and today’s Blue Homeland vision was once again emphasized during the event.
