Experts at the Marine Insurance Turkey 2026 Conference analyzed the unique risk profile of the Istanbul Strait, a critical maritime corridor.
THE INSURABILITY OF THE ISTANBUL STRAIT DISCUSSED AT CONFERENCE
Istanbul, May 20, 2026 — Within the framework of the Marine Insurance Turkey 2026 Conference held at the Sheraton Istanbul Ataköy Hotel, the risk profile and insurability of the Istanbul Strait, considered one of the world's busiest and most complex maritime corridors, were comprehensively discussed during a panel organized between 10:00 and 10:50.
The session titled 'Risk Management in the Bosphorus – Insuring One of the World's Most Challenging Waterways' was moderated by George Margetis, Chairman of the Executive Board of Margetis Maritime. The panel featured speakers including Türker Yıldırım, Partner at Esenyel & Partners; Av. Elif Kaçar, Turkish P&I Claims Group Manager; Capt. Cüneyt Din, Reinsurance and Claims Manager at KMC Broker; Nuri Can, Chairman of the Executive Board of Transbosphor; and Capt. Okan Dandin, Assistant Director of Aon Turkey Marine Division.
During the session, the unique risk profile of transit passage through the Turkish Straits, convoy regular traffic management, limited maneuverability, ferry-induced cross traffic, and high-density ship movements were analyzed. The speakers addressed the legal and actuarial implications of exposures to collision, grounding, and pollution from the perspective of Hull and Machinery (H&M) and P&I insurers.
The discussions particularly focused on traffic separation schemes, considerations regarding mandatory pilotage practices, and the financial repercussions of accidents occurring in this sensitive waterway. The panel provided a clear perspective on how the risk of the Strait is assessed, identified, and compensated among insurers, brokers, and shipowners.
The session concluded with a strong interest from leading stakeholders in the maritime sector.
