Lufthansa Cargo initiates ALPHA phase of EUR600 million LCCevo project at Frankfurt Airport, modernizing its cargo center for future growth.
Lufthansa Cargo has launched operations at the ALPHA phase of its EUR600 million LCCevo project at Frankfurt Airport, marking the start of a comprehensive modernization of its cargo center, reported Lufthansa.
The ALPHA phase spans 80,000 square meters and includes smart cargo flows, automated processes, and advanced warehouse infrastructure. The project aims to transform the Lufthansa Cargo Center into Europe's most modern air cargo hub by 2030 while maintaining round-the-clock operations.
The facilities feature intelligent conveyor systems and a fully automated 42-meter-high high-bay warehouse with nearly 3,000 storage slots, capable of more than 300 storage and retrieval operations per hour, effectively doubling capacity.
Chief Executive Ashwin Bhat stated that the investment is one of the largest in the company's history and a clear commitment to Frankfurt. He emphasized that the new infrastructure will strengthen Lufthansa Cargo's competitiveness and Germany's position in global markets.
Michael Niggemann, a Lufthansa Group board member, noted that the EUR600 million investment supports both cargo infrastructure and fleet modernization, reinforcing Frankfurt as a key international hub.
Hessian Economic Affairs Minister Kaweh Mansoori remarked that the project strengthens the region's logistics role, accelerates processes, and creates conditions for growth and jobs. Federal Transport State Secretary Stefan Schnorr added that air freight is vital for industries such as pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, welcoming Lufthansa's commitment to Germany.
Further phases, BRAVO and CHARLIE, will follow, incorporating sustainability measures including photovoltaic systems, green roofs, and energy-efficient building technology. Lufthansa Cargo stated that the project lays the foundation for future growth as the group marks its 100th anniversary.
