Iran intercepts a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz for fuel smuggling, detaining 16 crew members and seizing over $5 million in cargo.
Iran has seized a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, alleging involvement in fuel smuggling, according to reports from Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.
Officials stated that the vessel was intercepted near Qeshm Island while allegedly transferring fuel to a larger tanker waiting in the Gulf of Oman. Authorities reported discovering four million liters, equivalent to 25,000 barrels, aboard the ship.
The vessel has been ordered to Iran, and its 16 foreign crew members have been detained. Officials described the seizure as a significant blow to smuggling operations in the region.
Mojtaba Ghahramani, head of the Justice Department in Hormozgan province, emphasized that the crackdown was mandated by the courts, asserting that Iran's waters would never be safe for smugglers. He pledged to intensify efforts against fuel smuggling.
Reports indicate that Iran plans to confiscate the vessel and offload its cargo, with the total value of the ship and fuel exceeding $5 million.
This seizure marks a continuation of Iran's increased enforcement actions this year; in April, two tanker captains were sentenced to five years in prison and fined for similar offenses.
