The Middle East conflict has reshaped liner networks, boosting Indian Subcontinent traffic by 19.6%, according to analysts from Seatrade Maritime News.

Container shipping analysts say the Middle East war has triggered more than diversions, with evidence of a fundamental restructuring of liner networks, reported the UK's Seatrade Maritime News.

Drewry analyst Simon Heaney stated that the current conflict differs from past disruptions such as Covid, when supply shortages boosted carrier profits. He warned that the current crisis reduces supply without raising demand and could even contract volumes.

MDS Transmodal data shows that Indian Subcontinent traffic rose by 19.6 percent between February and April. Analyst Antonella Teodoro noted that this growth reflects a reconfiguration of network structures, positioning the region as a central transit and redistribution hub.

Long-haul services from the Indian Subcontinent to the Far East and North America increased by 16 percent, while capacity to Europe and the Mediterranean surged by 83.3 percent. The most dramatic rise was a 237.6 percent jump in Sub-Saharan Africa trades.

Ms. Teodoro mentioned that carriers are increasingly directing cargo through the Indian Subcontinent to maintain connectivity between East-West and North-South corridors. New service loops emerged in April, including ISC-North America with 81,000 TEU, ISC-North America-Latin America with 26,000 TEU, and ISC-Far East-Latin America-Sub-Saharan Africa with 41,000 TEU.
