Grieg Maritime Group contracts GT Wings to install AirWing 20 jet sails on Star Kirkenes, enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.
Grieg Maritime Group has signed a contract with GT Wings to install at least two AirWing 20 jet sails on its fleet, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
The sails will be fitted on the Star Kirkenes, enabling the vessel to harness wind power and cut fuel consumption. Technical Project Manager Marte Waage Haga stated that savings depend on the ship's trade pattern.
Chief Executive Matt Duke mentioned that the company's technical team assessed several wind-assisted propulsion options before selecting GT Wings' technology for its high thrust and compact footprint.
GT Wings described the deal as its first commercial order, noting that industrial-scale manufacturing is now established in Nantong and Europe. Chief Commercial Officer Liam Campbell indicated that forecasts show more than 80 wind-assisted vessels in operation by the end of 2026.
Installation of the sails will take place during drydock in late 2026 or early 2027. The design allows two sails to be mounted on the forecastle without affecting cargo operations.
The project marks the second full-scale AirWing installation and builds on recent investment from Grieg Kapital. GT Wings Chief Executive George Thompson stated that the collaboration demonstrates how wind propulsion can reduce emissions and exposure to volatile fuel prices.
The contract covers two sails for Star Kirkenes, with an option to extend the technology to three other K-class vessels.
