HMM reduces its fleet capacity target while increasing vessel count, signaling a shift from mega-ships to smaller, more agile vessels.
South Korea's largest container carrier HMM has cut its 2030 fleet capacity target while adding dozens more vessels, signaling a sharp reversal from the mega-ship strategy that has dominated container shipping, reported Amsterdam's Breakbulk News.
The carrier reduced its fleet capacity goal from 1.55 million TEU to 1.47 million TEU by 2030, while raising its planned vessel count from 130 to 166 ships. Investment has nearly doubled to KRW29 trillion (US$19.8 billion), up from KRW15 trillion.
The revised plan points to smaller average vessel sizes. HMM currently operates ships averaging 10,700 TEU, but spreading 1.47 million TEU across 166 vessels implies about 8,850 TEU per ship, signaling a tilt toward feeder and medium-sized vessels.
The move runs counter to the industry's push for ever-larger vessels, which lowered slot costs but tied carriers to fewer deep-water ports and reduced flexibility. Analysts said HMM sees more value in agility, enabling more frequent sailings and better coverage of regional markets.
Including bulk carriers, HMM expects its total fleet to reach 276 vessels by 2030. The investment will also cover terminals, ports, and logistics infrastructure. Smaller ships are seen as better suited to adopting alternative fuels such as methanol and LNG.
The decision comes as alliances restructure, with HMM a member of the Premier Alliance alongside ONE and Yang Ming. Analysts said the carrier's bet on smaller ships could influence rivals and reshape port operations, giving mid-size terminals renewed relevance.
HMM has also committed to a 2045 net-zero target. Analysts said the carrier's strategy reflects a wager that in an era of supply chain volatility and energy transition, flexibility outweighs brute scale.
