DaChan Bay Terminals unveils a fully electric tractor fleet, enhancing sustainability and reducing emissions in China's container shipping industry.
DaChan Bay Terminals has become the first container terminal in China to operate a fully electric in-yard tractor fleet after receiving 27 battery-swap units to replace LNG-powered vehicles, according to a company press release.
The new tractors deliver strong heavy-load performance while cutting operating noise and emissions. Equipped with regenerative braking, they recover energy during use, boosting efficiency. The fleet is expected to reduce direct carbon emissions by about 5,000 tonnes annually, supporting Shenzhen's dual decarbonisation targets.
A ceremony marked the milestone, attended by shareholders, haulage contractors, and the battery-swapping partner. Managing Director Brian Yeung thanked the government and partners for their support, saying the achievement reflects a shared commitment to clean energy and zero-carbon operations.
Guests witnessed live demonstrations of charging and battery swapping, highlighting the convenience of the new systems. Facilities include automated rapid swap technology, intelligent management, and safety protections. Each swap takes less than five minutes, ensuring uninterrupted 24-hour operations.
DaChan Bay Terminals has a record of early adoption of green technologies. In 2007, it became the first terminal worldwide to fully deploy electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes. The latest electrification underscores its leadership in energy conservation and emissions reduction in the port industry.
