Westports Malaysia has launched 60 Westwell E-Truck electric terminal tractors, enhancing its green initiatives and operational efficiency.
Westports Malaysia in Port Klang has received a fleet of 60 Westwell E-Truck intelligent electric terminal tractors, equipped with battery-swapping systems and supporting infrastructure.
This delivery positions Westports as Malaysia's largest operator of pure electric terminal tractors and the first port in the country to integrate battery-swapping technology. The milestone marks a significant step in Westports' journey towards green and intelligent transformation, setting a benchmark for low-carbon port development in the ASEAN region.
Located along the vital Strait of Malacca, one of the world's busiest shipping routes, Westports Malaysia serves as a key gateway connecting East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. As Malaysia's largest container hub, Westports recorded a container throughput of 11.33 million TEUs in 2025, a 3.2% year-on-year increase, according to the Ministry of Transport. The port is undergoing a massive RM 39.6 billion expansion project to extend quay length by 4.8 kilometers and double its annual handling capacity from 14 million TEUs to 27 million TEUs. As part of its ESG commitments, Westports is investing heavily in solar energy and fleet electrification, with the delivery of the Westwell E-Trucks marking a pivotal milestone in its green transformation strategy.
The trucks, designed for reliability in demanding environments, feature specialized anti-corrosion and anti-salt-spray treatment to perform under Malaysia's high temperatures, humidity, and heavy rainfall. They are supported by the Westwell PowerOnair battery-swap station, which enables automated battery changes in under five minutes, ensuring seamless operations in one of the region's busiest terminals.
Following a smooth delivery process, the fleet has entered the commissioning phase and will begin commercial operations by the end of August 2025. Once operational, these electric tractors are expected to improve terminal efficiency, cut costs from high fuel prices, and enhance driver comfort and occupational health.
