COSCO Shipping is expanding its heavy lift fleet with four new MPP vessels to support the growing wind energy sector, investing $213 million.
COSCO Shipping Specialised Carriers is expanding its heavy lift fleet in response to the increasing demand from the wind energy sector. The company has placed an order for four multipurpose (MPP) vessels with Chengxi Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
In a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, COSCO Shipping Specialised Carriers announced an investment of approximately $213 million for these four new vessels. Each vessel will be equipped with heavy lift cranes and will have a capacity of 40,000 dwt.
According to the delivery schedule, the first vessel is expected to join the fleet in June 2028, with the remaining three vessels anticipated to be delivered by the end of February 2029.
The company emphasized that this order reflects a strong market outlook for wind energy logistics. As offshore wind projects move further from the coast, there is a growing demand for transporting larger and heavier turbine components.
By actively participating in the transportation of wind energy equipment, COSCO Shipping Specialised Carriers aims to enhance the flexibility and lifting capacity of its multipurpose fleet. This new order will strengthen the company's competitiveness in the transportation of next-generation wind turbines and heavy project cargoes.
