Experts challenge Albania's claim of Porto Romano handling two million TEU annually, citing quay length limitations and global averages.
The Albanian government's claim that Porto Romano will handle two million TEU annually has been challenged, reports VoxNews. Analysts have stated that the quay length in the project design makes such figures unrealistic.
The American Chamber of Commerce USA-Albania noted that the container pier will be only 400 metres long. At global averages of 80,000 to 120,000 TEU per 100 metres of quay, the port could process no more than 500,000 TEU a year.
To reach two million TEU, Porto Romano would need at least 2,000 metres of quay. Comparisons were drawn with Gioia Tauro in Italy, which has 5,100 metres of quay and processes about 4.5 million TEU annually, yielding 90,000 TEU per 100 metres.
Critics have argued that the government's projection would require breaking global records, with throughput five times higher than the average. They added that dry ports in Skopje and Pristina affect land accommodation but not quay processing efficiency.
