Port of Los Angeles reports 956,000 TEUs in August, marking a record summer despite a slight year-on-year decline.
Newly released data from the Port of Los Angeles confirm that container throughput reached 956,000 TEUs in August, representing a marginal year-on-year decline of 0.3%.
Inbound loaded containers fell 0.8% to 500,000 TEUs, outbound loaded containers decreased 9.3% to 116,000 TEUs, and empty container movements rose 4.2% year-on-year to 340,000 TEUs.
For the first eight months of 2026, the Port of Los Angeles recorded cumulative container throughput of 7.039 million TEUs, advancing 1.5% against the same period in the prior year.
Of particular note, the port surpassed 1 million TEUs in June, followed by 960,000 TEUs in July and 956,000 TEUs in August - a combined three-month total exceeding 2.91 million TEUs, making this the busiest summer season in the port's history.
Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, described the period as an exceptionally strong summer, attributing the robust performance to resilient consumer demand, early holiday season front-loading, and a broad and diversified cargo mix. Looking ahead, Seroka noted that momentum entering the final months of the year remains favorable, with September projected to deliver continued strength. He further expressed confidence that the Port of Los Angeles is well-positioned to navigate and adapt as the landscape of global trade continues to evolve.
