Top 10 container carriers have nearly 11 million TEU on order, raising concerns about overcapacity and freight rate pressures.

The world's ten largest container shipping carriers have a combined vessel orderbook of about 10.89 million TEU, according to an October 2026 infographic from Maritime Analytica citing data from Alphaliner. The scale of the orderbook has raised concerns about future capacity growth and downward pressure on freight rates as new ships enter an already competitive global market.

The infographic shows Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) leading the industry with 2.91 million TEU on order. COSCO Shipping has the largest orderbook relative to its existing fleet, at 52%.

The infographic figures have not been independently verified. Alphaliner's latest Top 100 ranking, published in late October 2026, points to an even larger pipeline. In that ranking, orders for the same ten carriers total about 11.48 million TEU, and MSC's orderbook alone stands at 3.38 million TEU.

The figures highlight the scale of investment underway among major carriers. The industry still faces uncertainty about global trade growth, shipping route disruptions, and the balance between vessel supply and cargo demand.

MSC's orderbook of 2.91 million TEU represents approximately 39% of its existing fleet capacity. That places the carrier ahead of all competitors in absolute volume. MSC already operates the world's largest container fleet, with approximately 7.46 million TEU and a 21.5% share of global capacity, according to Alphaliner.

COSCO follows with 1.91 million TEU on order, equivalent to 52% of its existing fleet. This is the highest ratio among the ten carriers examined and signals a substantial expansion program relative to its current capacity. Alphaliner's consolidated COSCO Group figures include subsidiary OOCL.

Maersk has 1.76 million TEU on order, equivalent to 37% of its fleet. CMA CGM has committed to 1.69 million TEU, representing 38%.

Together, these four carriers account for approximately 8.27 million TEU, or nearly 76% of the combined orderbook in the infographic. Alphaliner's latest data shows the same concentration, with the top four holding about 76% of orders among the ten largest lines.

Among the remaining operators, Evergreen has 850,000 TEU on order, representing 42% of its existing fleet. Ocean Network Express (ONE) has 580,000 TEU, equivalent to 27%. Hapag-Lloyd's orderbook stands at 490,000 TEU, or 20% of its fleet. Yang Ming has 260,000 TEU on order, representing 33%. The infographic lists HMM and ZIM at about 220,000 TEU each, or 21% and 32% of their respective fleets.

Alphaliner's latest ranking closely matches the infographic for Evergreen, ONE, Hapag-Lloyd, and Yang Ming. It shows notably higher orderbooks for MSC, HMM, and ZIM.

COSCO holds the highest relative orderbook among the ten largest carriers in both data sets. The figures show different expansion strategies. Some carriers are pursuing substantial absolute capacity growth, while others are expanding more aggressively relative to their existing operations.

The scale of new vessel investment poses a significant challenge to balancing container shipping supply and demand. Alphaliner data shows the global fleet at approximately 34.96 million TEU across 7,673 active ships. That makes the orderbook of the ten largest carriers, more than 11 million TEU, a substantial addition to available capacity.

As new ships enter service, carriers will need enough cargo growth to absorb them. If fleet expansion outpaces demand, operators could face sharper competition for cargo, lower vessel utilization, and downward pressure on freight rates. The impact will depend heavily on delivery schedules, vessel deployment, and the ability of shipping lines to manage capacity.
