Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia temporarily halts operations due to a cybersecurity incident affecting its systems, with recovery efforts underway.
Malaysia's Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), one of the world's largest container transshipment hubs, temporarily suspended terminal operations this week after detecting a cybersecurity incident that affected its operating systems.
PTP said it detected the incident at 2334 hrs local time on September 9. The operator immediately isolated the affected systems as a precaution, which temporarily suspended container terminal operations while recovery efforts began.
In an update issued on September 10, PTP stated that it had begun a controlled resumption of container terminal operations after restoring the affected system. The operator added that recovery measures would be implemented progressively, with details communicated to relevant stakeholders.
As part of the interim recovery plan, PTP introduced manual gate-in processing for laden and empty export containers, including free zone inter-terminal transfers, from 1930 hrs local time on September 10.
'Details of the resumption have been communicated to the relevant stakeholders and will be implemented progressively,' PTP said.
A spokesperson for Maersk told Lloyd's List that the carrier was working closely with PTP and actively managing the incident's operational impact.
'While some vessels may experience delays, recovery efforts are progressing well. Our priority is to minimize disruption to customers and support the continued normalization of operations and supply chains. We are closely monitoring the situation and working to inform customers of any impact on cargo movements and mitigate it where possible,' the spokesperson added.
Lloyd's List Intelligence vessel tracking indicated the disruption had caused limited operational impact, with most scheduled containership arrivals and departures continuing without significant delays. One exception was the 15,226 teu Maersk Hanoi (IMO: 9784295), sailing to Tanjung Pelepas from Pointe Noire. The vessel deviated from its route for around 10 hours on September 10 while transiting the Strait of Malacca before resuming its voyage to the Malaysian hub.
As of 1100 hrs UK time on Thursday, Lloyd's List Intelligence vessel tracking showed no significant queues outside the port and no containerships waiting at anchor.
The disruption carries weight because of PTP's central role in global container flows. The wider Johor port complex - which includes PTP and Johor Port's container terminal at Pasir Gudang - handled a record 15.1m teu in 2025. More than 14m teu moved through PTP alone, reinforcing its standing as a major transshipment hub and a key node in the Gemini Cooperation network operated by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.
The terminal connects Asia with Europe, North America, and the Middle East, so any interruption is likely to draw close attention from carriers, shippers, freight forwarders, and cargo owners weighing the reliability of their routing, transit schedules, and downstream delivery commitments.
