THE de minimis US Customs exemption will still be allowed so e-commerce businesses can ship low-value goods across borders duty free - but not for much longer warns the Trump administration, reports Mumbai's Stat Trade Times.
As it stands, the de minimis exemption allows for the importation of goods with a total value of up to US$800 without incurring customs duties and taxes.
However, recent changes have affected this exemption, particularly for goods imported from or manufactured in China. As of February 2025, the de minimis exemption no longer applies to Chinese goods, meaning they are subject to duties and taxes regardless of their value.
The de minimis exemption will temporarily remain in place for products from China, Canada and Mexico even as US tariffs imports from those countries.
That plan changed when Mr Trump amended the Canada and Mexico tariff orders, which meant duty-free de minimis imports are available until systems are in place for revenue processing and collection from imports.
Once the Commerce Secretary notifies the President that the requirements have been met, the de minimis exemption will cease for products from all the three nations.
