A COSCO shipping vessel from Russia is transporting wind turbine blades along the Northern Sea Route (NSR), reports Munich's Russia Briefing.
Russian Far East plenipotentiary envoy Yuri Trutnev has projected that cargo shipping along the NSR will achieve a record volume of 36.6 million tonnes in 2023.
Mr Trutnev holds responsibility for the development of the Russian Arctic.
'There will be a record volume of shipping along the Northern Sea Route for 2023. We believe today that it will be 36.6 million tonnes. This is more than had been planned,' said Mr Trutnev.
Transit cargo along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) involving a second country reached a record 2.1 million tonnes in 2023. This marks a historic high for the route, with oil emerging as the primary transit cargo for the first time.
In 2022, the overall cargo transportation volume along the Northern Sea Route reached 34 million tonnes.
Russian President Putin has set an ambitious goal of increasing NSR cargo traffic to 80 million tonnes by 2024, more than double the volume in 2023.
In recent years, significant government decisions have been made to boost hydrocarbon projects and enhance infrastructure and fleet development along the NSR.
These initiatives include a comprehensive plan for NSR development through 2035, backed by US$20 billion in funding.
