On Feb 19, 2017, at 6 a.m. a fire broke out in the engine room of the "SNAV Toscana" while the ferry which had come from Naples was one mile off the port of Palermo. No injuries were reported among the 113 passengers and 75 crew members. Firefighters intervened immediately with the assistance of the port authority and the police after the master had maneuvered his ship into port. While the captain raised the alarm, the fire crew on board went into action and the crew members were acting according to the emergency plan. The passengers were quickly assembled and taken to collection points established by the evacuation plan, away from the engine room. There was no panic as the staff reacted quickly and supported the passengers well and gave directions. Smoke was visible and burning diesel could be smelled. A few tense moment came when the ship docked at the pier Saint Lucia. The passengers were waiting to get off at once, and instead had to remain on board. The door was not opened immediately because the staff, along with the fire department, feared that the fire which was so far under control could be fed by oxygene when opening the gates. The evacuation then was postponed for one hour, during which the passengers were always been assisted. Meanwhile, the firefighters completed the extinguishing and cooling operations of the engine room and remained on site for a while to monitor the situation and avoid that the fire reignited. Technicians went on board in order to determine th ecause of the fire. The prosecutor of Palermo was waiting on the fire report to assess whether to open an investigation.
