The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has reported the loss of 16 liveaboard dive boats operating in Egypt’s Red Sea over the past five years, resulting in multiple fatalities, including British nationals. Seven incidents occurred in the last 21 months alone, with three of those leading to significant loss of life.According to MAIB, on 24 April 2023, the dive boat “Carlton Queen” capsized near Hurghada, injuring several passengers, including UK citizens, though all 33 onboard were rescued. On 11 June 2023, a fire broke out on the dive vessel “Hurricane,” leading to the rescue of 26 individuals; however, three British divers are still missing. Most recently, on 25 November 2024, the “Sea Story” capsized and sank south of Port Ghalib with 45 people onboard; four bodies were recovered while seven remain unaccounted for.
Investigations point to poor vessel construction, haphazard extensions that undermine stability, and critical safety equipment—such as life rafts and fire extinguishers—being missing or out of service. The MAIB also highlights inadequate crew training, defective emergency exits, and the absence of proper safety briefings for passengers.Prospective tourists are strongly advised to book trips only with reputable operators that can verify proper safety standards. Upon boarding, passengers should immediately request a detailed safety briefing, covering emergency signals, muster stations, available life-saving equipment, and procedures to follow in case of a fire or capsize.
