THE Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has allowed xiaomi to independently produce its own electric vehicles (EVs), reports Caixin.
The ministry has added Xiaomi EV Technology, the smartphone giant's carmaking subsidiary, to its latest catalog of companies allowed to manufacture vehicles in China.
Gaining the independent carmaking qualification is a major achievement for Xiaomi, which brought its first model to market in March, just three years after its founder Lei Jun announced a US$10 billion investment in the competitive EV space.
In a separate MIIT catalog item, there were four versions of what appears to be Xiaomi Auto's first EV model, the SU7. The ministry catalog lists new vehicles allowed to be sold in China.
