INDIA's fast growing aviation industry now boasts of four new airports and four new terminals that have opened in the last 12 months, reports London's Economist.
Eight thousand workers, working 24/7, have blasted away 55 million cubic metres of rock, diverted a river and drained swamps.
Seven local villages have been uprooted and moved. Work, that began in 2021 and is to be completed by late 2024.
That will give India 149 operational civil airports, twice the number it had a decade ago. Nine additional airports have been approved and many more are planned.
In Jewar, 75 kilometres from Delhi, a second airport for the capital is also mushrooming. Officials envisage 15 dual-airport cities by 2040. There is talk of a possible third airport for Mumbai.
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) may soon become one of the largest airports in the world owing to the continuous expansion, reports the Times of India.
As the busiest airport in the country, the IGIA has three terminals, with Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2) handling only domestic flights and Terminal 3 (T3) taking care of both domestic and international traffic.
Currently, T1 is undergoing expansion and will be ready along with the fourth runway by September 2023.
Said Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia: 'At present, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport currently caters to 70 million passengers, and this number is likely to increase to 109 million by the end of this year.'
Delhi airport is the only one in India with three runways and is soon to become the only airport in the country with four runways.
Also, there are plans to make T3 handle only Tata Group airlines including Air India, Air Asia India and Vistara as well as foreign airlines. T1 is to handle low-cost carriers such as IndiGo and T2 will cater to only domestic flights.
