Wärtsilä Chosen Again for New Very Large Ammonia Carrier Ships16 December 2024, 11 AM EETWärtsilä Gas Solutions, a part of Wärtsilä Corporation, has been selected to provide cargo handling systems for three new 93,000 m³ Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs). These ships are being constructed at the Hanwha Ocean shipyard in Korea, formerly known as DSME. Two vessels are for a Greek ship owner, and one is for a Japanese owner. The orders, confirmed in Q4 2024, strengthen Wärtsilä’s leading position in the market for cargo handling systems.The Wärtsilä cargo handling systems include engineering, materials, supervision, commissioning, and gas trial services. The systems are designed to ensure safe and efficient handling of ammonia cargo.“We trust Wärtsilä for this project as their products are efficient and reliable. Our past experience with them has been excellent,” said Mr. Lee, Leader of Basic Design Team at Hanwha Ocean Co.VLACs are a special type of gas carrier designed to transport ammonia, which requires reinforced tanks and hulls due to its high specific gravity. These ships also feature a deeper draught when fully loaded.“Wärtsilä is proud to be the largest supplier of complete cargo handling systems for VLACs,” said Patrick Ha, Sales Manager at Wärtsilä Gas Solutions. “We have a strong relationship with Hanwha and the ship owners and are committed to supporting this project.”The Wärtsilä equipment will start being delivered to the shipyard in Q2 2025.
