VIRGIN Cargo has appointed Leisure Kargo as its new general sales agent (GSA) in Turkey, reports London's Air Cargo Eye.
The arrangement will see the airline's airfreight division move shipments through the virgin network to Brussels and Tel Aviv, for example, via a number of regional UK gateways, says a statement.
Initially, Leisure Kargo's representation will cover airfreight exports from four departure points in Turkey, those at Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen, Ankara, Izmir and Antalya.
The carrier selected the GSA because of its 'professional presentation and existing relationships' with a number of airline partners, the statement adds.
Steve Buckerfield, head of sales at Virgin Atlantic Cargo, believes the GSA appointment will re-establish the carrier's representation in the re-named Republic of Turkey. 'This is a very important cargo export market, and we look forward to building new customer relationships [there] and opening up our network to Turkish exporters who I'm sure will love the Virgin service.'
Earlier this month, minister of trade Mehmet Mus disclosed that Turkey's success in exports last year continued into the first seven months of 2022. 'Turkey achieved the highest monthly export value in the seventh month, as it did in the first six months of 2022,' he pointed out.
'In the first seven months of the year, Turkey's total exports amounted to US$144.4 billion. In July, our foreign trade volume soared by 28.7 per cent compared to the previous year and reached $47.7 billion. This value is the highest export figure for the month of July ever measured. Our imports in July amounted to $29.1 billion.'
Zeki Guler, managing director at Leisure Kargo, says of the Virgin Cargo connection: 'This cooperation will open [further] essential export opportunities.'
