PICO Colectivo, a design collective focusing on political interventions, has transformed vandalised buildings in Guacara, 150 kilometres west of Caracas, Venezuela, using shipping containers, reports Milan's Designboom.
Pico created the 'cultural production zone'. the addressing the need for community spaces as a result of huge gaps and precarious structures commonly found in the city centre.
This was done, said the report, by repurposing shipping containers, creating a variety of functions including: urban garden, cafeteria, image and audiovisual laboratory, recording studio and music room, gallery, multipurpose workshop, a roller skating plaza, sports court and a theatrical stage.
The scheme uses an existing building that was previously left to ruin after street protests. 'The project gained support from a state financing programme that provides technical equipment and cultural tools,' said the report.
'The design uses shipping containers to accommodate the spaces and stacks them to create multiple structures into a single, more complex system,' it said.
