THE us Army has established a new regional headquarters in Alaska to oversee rotary-wing flight operations in the far north, reports London's FlightGlobal.
The Arctic Aviation Command was officially inaugurated on August 8 during a ceremony at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, about 130 nautical miles (240 km) south of the Arctic Circle in Alaska's interior.
This base houses a brigade of ground combat troops, an attack aviation and reconnaissance battalion equipped with Boeing AH-64E Apaches, and a general aviation battalion that operates Boeing CH-47F Chinooks and Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawks.
Previously, these two aviation units were under the command of locations further south, such as Hawaii and Washington state.
'Success here in the Arctic depends on knowledge that can only be learned by living and working here,' said Major General Joseph Hilbert.
