UNITED Parcel Service (UPS) has reached an agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters that will eliminate the dual wage system for delivery drivers in their upcoming contract, reports London's Air Cargo News.
Some believe this development reduces the chance of a nationwide strike when the current labour agreement expires at the end of July.
Part-time drivers, who were part of the lower tier, were earning US$5 per hour less than their full-time colleagues, who had a top rate of $39 per hour.
The Teamsters announced the tentative agreement on Twitter, highlighting their success in convincing ups to end mandatory overtime for unscheduled workdays and grant Martin Luther King Day as a paid holiday.
According to UPS spokeswoman Natasha Amadi, the new agreement will involve shifting current part-time drivers to a Tuesday through Saturday schedule to accommodate weekend deliveries.
This breakthrough followed a long day of negotiations in Washington, where representatives from both sides engaged in discussions within a closely guarded meeting room.
The Teamsters-UPS agreement is the largest private-sector collective bargaining agreement in the United States and plays a vital role in the supply chain, representing 340,000 drivers.
