DANISH container shipping company Unifeeder is to offer a new weekly service between Gavle harbour and Norrkoping on Sweden's east coast and Gdynia and Gdansk in Poland, reports London's Sea News.

'The direction of the new line is to create short-sea shipping on the Swedish east coast. We create the shortest possible line to Gdansk, which has grown into one of the most important transshipment ports for the Baltic and Nordic market. Gdynia also has a large range of lines within Europe. In this way, we create a flexible, sustainable and competitive solution,' said Unifeeder shortsea manager Ebbe Bisgaard.

The new line is scheduled to kick off from the port of Gdansk on August 10 and will arrive at Gavle harbour on August 12.

'With expanded short-sea shipping, we promote both import and export for the region and the national freight strategy's goal of moving from road to rail. It promotes both the environment and the economy,' said Gavle port CEO Fredrik Svanbom.

Gavle Hamn AB and terminal operator Yilport are investing SEK825 million (US$87.367 million) in expanding the container terminal, which will be able to handle 600,000 TEU annually and accommodate larger vessels when the works are completed in 2020.
